Workshops with Jessie Lee, Copenhagen Pilates Studio – Denmark
A Danish Wounded Warrior Pilates intiative – Lecture
This lecture will through power point and film tell the story of the Danish Wounded Warrior Project, which is a voluntary initiative founded in 2010 in Copenhagen, in a wish to help wounded soldiers returning from Afghanistan. Pilates techniques are applied to help restore functional movements to soldiers as well as civilians with multiple injuries. You will see unique footage of case studies and the progress made over several years, learn about the challenges and rewards with working with this population and how the Pilates vocabulary is applied to enhance and improve gait and balance.
- The Rotational Component of the Upper Body in Pilates
In this workshop we will explore the rotational possibilities of the upper torso in Pilates. We will look at how we can add more rotation to the Pilates repertoire. In everyday activities there is often too little rotation and clients experience stiffness, tension and reduced mobility in the upper body. We will explore the relationship of the head, neck and eyes with the upper torso and how it affects the whole spine. Adding rotational movements to your class will give clients a great sense of wellbeing, increase the kinaesthetic awareness and improve sports activities like golf and tennis. You will gain tools to address these issues through simple seated exercises to more advanced work on the Pilates equipment. We will add valuable hands-on cues to give the optimal assistance for your clients.
- The Gait Cycle – Re-gaining a balanced Gait pattern in the Pilates Studio
This workshop will focus on Pilates exercises that improve gait and postural function. Performing a basic activity like walking with ease is the prerequisite to a healthy lifestyle and performing any sports activity. Well functioning gait patterns will improve the overall function of the entire body and cause less wear and tear on the joints. We will look at the basic bio-mechanics of gait and common imbalances. We will then explore basic exercises that can be performed anywhere and can be incorporated into a matwork class. Moving on we will look at exercises on the Pilates equipment that bring more dynamic movement and challenge into your program.
Brett has an inbox magazine called Pilates Intel. www.Pilatesintel.com
He started his professional life in the world of ballet, working with various companies in the US. Later on he moved to New York and branched out into modern along with the ballet. Since then, he has lived in Finland and now in Stockholm Sweden.
Brett became a Pilates instructor in 2005 and has been teaching ever since. The intelligent technique that Pilates is, and the chance to continue to be physical, attracted him to this field after being so long in the dance world. Along with teaching Pilates, Brett also works on a consultant basis as a software developer.
One of the unique aspects of Pilates when compared to other exercise forms, is the required attention to detail and the development of the dynamic of an inner opposition of. The result being a being that is more alive and conscious of the body in action. The flex-band is a simple tool that was introduced by contemporary Pilates schools, and a found in the studio of Joseph Pilates. Using the flex band adds a welcome variation to the Pilates practice, a pleasure for those the Pilates student and professional alike. But more importantly, the flex band, used creatively and intelligently, can aid in the development of a deeper understanding of those oppositional dynamics mentioned above. The potential result being a greater wisdom for movement out of a strong centre, giving way to more freedom and well-being.
